Hanping Chinese Dictionary Lite 3.8.3/4 released!

June 1st, 2014

Please note: This update is going out as a staged rollout, so if you have not yet received it, then you should receive it some time in the next couple of days.

This update covers:

  • Better sorting of search results
  • Several secondary screens updated with new UI and better UX. UI now honours night mode setting
    • About screen – Social networks section (Facebook, Twitter, Google+), Legal notices section, removed “Touch to refresh purchase info” (now in Add-ons screen)
    • Settings screen – separated Chinese display settings into second screen. This allows first Settings screen to show a convenient summary of your Chinese settings in one sample text
    • Add-ons screen – this is a new screen showing which dictionaries and apps you currently have installed. Clicking the refresh button will check the Google Play server for your in-app purchases. It will also refresh the information on the screen in case you have just installed a dictionary or app etc
    • Backup / Restore screen – Pro version only
  • Storage – Completely reorganised the way Hanping stores data (dictionary data and user data) on your device. For your privacy, your user data (e.g. starred words, search history and settings) is stored in internal storage so that it cannot be read/stolen/sabotaged by other apps. By default, app data (such as dictionary data, character data etc) is now stored in internal storage. However, if your device is low on internal storage space (common on older devices) then it will be stored in ‘external’ storage.  There is now a new location for things like downloads, fonts and backups – /Android/data/com.embermitre.hanping. Another advantage of these changes is that Hanping will now work on old devices with empty SD card slot
  • Miscellaneous
    • Radicals – after clicking on a radical, the next screen now shows the characters in the custom font (if you are using one)
    • Audio files – these are now bundled within the app, so no need for the one-time download. Also they should play a little faster than before
    • Hanping Chinese! – We have a new website address as well as new TwitterFacebook and Google+ pages
    • Some bug fixes

Available from the Google Play.

Hanping Chinese Dictionary Pro 3.8.3 released!

May 27th, 2014

For a small minority of users, there was a bug in the earlier 3.8 releases that prevented starred words and search history (from pre3.8 versions) being retained in 3.8+ versions.

This has been fixed in this release.

However, if you have previously updated to 3.8.0/3.8.1/3.8.2 then you may need to do some small steps to get you starred words back.

First, try simply running the app (version 3.8.3). If all your starred words and search history are restored then you don’t need to read on.

  1. Clear Data on Hanping Pro app (to do this click on the first item in Hanping’s About screen and then click on the Clear Data button)
  2. In the directory /Android/data/com.embermitre.hanping please rename any “backups” folder to “backups.old” (You can use a File manager app such as Solid File Explorer to do this). You can also try skipping this step because it is only necessary in certain situations.
  3. Run Hanping Pro again. If prompted to restore user data then choose Yes

Please email us if you have any concerns: [email protected]

Available from the Google Play Store & Amazon Appstore.

Hanping Chinese Dictionary Pro 3.8.0/1/2 released!

May 19th, 2014

3.8.1 & 3.8.2 are minor bugfix updates on 3.8.0.

This update covers:

    • Backup / Restore screen – see below for more details
  • Backup / Restore – You user data (starred words, search history and settings) is now automatically backed up to the /Android/data/com.embermitre.hanping/backups folder.  This means that you can Clear Data without risk losing your starred words etc.  You can (and maybe should!) check the status of your backups in the new Backup/Restore screen. The ‘User Data’ refers to the current state of your starred words etc. The ‘Local Backup’ refers to the latest backup in /Android/data/com.embermitre.hanping/backups.  In future, we hope to add a ‘Remote Backup’ section but sadly there is no robust technical solution available to do this yet. In the meantime, you can ‘Export backup’ to keep your user data in a safe place (e.g. Dropbox or your email account).  Restoring user data is now also improved. You can either ‘Import backup’ or simply ‘Share’ an old backup from another app (e.g. dropbox or email attachment)
– We have a new website address as well as new Twitter, Facebook and Google+ pages

Available from the Google Play Store & Amazon Appstore.

Retired App: Hanping Chinese Classic

February 24th, 2014

On 22.02.2014, we officially retired our Hanping Chinese Classic app for Android.

hanping_classic_app_icon_zh_en_512

Originally released as Hanping Chinese Dictionary back on 13 October 2009, this was our first Android app, and first Chinese app too.  On 28 January 2012, it was the first Chinese language-learning Android app to reach 500,000 downloads on Google Play, and ended up with 924,038 downloads. The vast majority of those downloads were achieved before we released Hanping Chinese Dictionary Lite (on 7 September 2012) which superseded the Classic app. At its peak it attracted almost 3,000 downloads a day! If you combine downloads from all app stores, Hanping Chinese Classic was the first Chinese language-learning Android app to reach one million downloads.

So, after 1594 days on Google Play, here are its final ratings:

Final Hanping Classic Ratings

If you still want to use Hanping Chinese Classic (which works on devices running Android 1.5 Cupcake or higher) then you can download it here.

Thank you to everyone who supported us to make this app happen.

You can find our current Chinese language-learning apps for Android on Google Play and Amazon.

Hanping Chinese Dictionary Lite 3.7.0 released!

February 22nd, 2014
  • Clipboard Monitoring (Android 4.0+) – when you copy Chinese characters into the Clipboard you can optionally get a system notification showing the definition. This monitoring can be triggered at system startup (the app now requests “run at startup” permission) or triggered manually (in the action bar overflow menu). Unfortunately, many Android 4.3 devices have a well-known bug preventing realtime Clipboard monitoring from working properly. In this case, you will need to use the Clipboard icon in the notification, to trigger Hanping to read the Clipboard. Please read this topic on our forum for more information
  • Support for Sharing Chinese text to Hanping’s new Notification feature. For example, if you select some Chinese text, instead of Copying to Clipboard, you can Share to Hanping Notification.  This has the bonus of not unnecessarily touching your Clipboard (which might trigger other Clipboard-listening apps). Also, you don’t need to have Clipboard Monitoring running for this to work. This is good for those who do not want to have a persistent notification in their Notification Shade
  • New app icon – the old one looked oh-so-Gingerbready, so we’ve gone for a clean simple approach to better reflect the app’s UI and UX. We hope you like it!
  • Other bug fixes

New Permission request: “run at startup” – allows the Clipboard Monitoring feature to be triggered when your device starts up.  Use the settings icon in the Clipboard Monitoring notification, to configure this.

Available from the Google Play Store.
