Hanping Chinese Dictionary Pro 2.8.0 released!

December 18th, 2011
  • Added ABC English-Chinese in-app purchase (~10USD). Press Menu button > Buy for more details
  • Improved Search screen header: now much cleaner
  • Minor bug fixes
A few weeks ago we launched the ABC Chinese-English Dictionary as an in-app purchase. Now, we are launching the other way with the superb ABC English-Chinese Dictionary.  This is something we’ve wanted to add for ages because doing English lookups on a Chinese-English dictionary (CC-CEDICT) is never going to match on the less common English words. Having a dictionary with English headwords makes a huge difference to the user experience for those who frequently search using English.
Here are the highlights:
  • Over 62,000 English headwords
  • 6,400 example sentences translated into both Simplified & Traditional Chinese and Pinyin
  • Grammatical information such as Part of Speech

When you search using English, Hanping Pro performs a lookup on the ABC English-Chinese dictionary first. If no exact matches are found then the search falls back to the CC-CEDICT dictionary. The icon in the top-left of the screen indicates which dictionary was used to give the current search results.

Please note, this dictionary does not currently include a Chinese index, so searching by Chinese will still only give results from the CC-CEDICT dictionary (or ABC Chinese-English dictionary if you have that installed).  We are looking to improve on this in the near future.

Currently, it is not possible to star English words. This will be coming shortly. In the meantime, use the History to refer back to English words you have previously looked up.

As with app purchases, you only need to purchase the ABC English-Chinese Dictionary once to then use on all of your devices. The purchase is linked to your Google account, so any Android device where you are signed into the Google account (and has Android Market, which is used to check the license), will have access to the paid dictionary.

Android Market issues are the same as with app purchases. If you are in China/Taiwan, you will probably need to do a sim swap to make the purchase. This is a pain but only needs to be done once. Please read this for more details.

Known issues:

  • If you are running CyanogenMod then you may experience a problem in the formatting of the ABC entry (where the indentation is collapsed). This makes longer entries slightly more difficult to read and also results in misaligned highlighting when clicking on links. We suspect most users won’t find this much of a problem and hopefully CM will fix this in the near future.

Available from the Android Market.

Hanping Chinese Dictionary Pro 2.7.1 released!

December 1st, 2011
  • Browse screen (showing a single dictionary entry) now also shows the definition for the same word in any other dictionaries installed. This is only applicable if you have the ABC Chinese-English dictionary installed (because otherwise you only have one dictionary)
  • Before, when clicking on Chinese character in a headword, Hanping would search for that character in the dictionary and show the corresponding entry. This would not always result in the desired result (because sometimes there are multiple entries for the same character) and so now, Hanping also takes the corresponding Pinyin into consideration
  • Minor bug fixes

Users running Cyanogen Mod: If you have purchased the ABC Chinese-English dictionary you may have noticed the formatting of the dictionary entry (on the Browse screen) does not include any indentation (i.e. each line is flush against the left hand edge of the screen). This is a known problem (Issue 3301)with Cyanogen Mod and hopefully they will fix it soon. As a knock on effect, you may notice that sometimes the highlighting of a link does not line up with the link itself. We suspect most users will not find this to be a big issue.

Available from the Android Market.

Hanping Chinese Dictionary Pro 2.7.0b released. Includes ABC dictionary support!

November 23rd, 2011

The Pro version now includes an in-app product for the superb ABC Chinese-English Dictionary.

Here are the highlights:

  • Over 200,000 Chinese headwords including Simplified & Traditional characters as well as Pinyin pronunciation
  • A total of over 10,000 example sentences including Simplified & Traditional forms and Pinyin pronunciation (but no Traditional)
  • Grammatical information such as Part of Speech and Measure Words

When you search using Chinese characters or Pinyin, Hanping Pro performs a lookup on the ABC dictionary first. If no exact matches are found then the search falls back to the CC-CEDICT dictionary. The icon in the top-left of the screen indicates which dictionary was used to give the current search results.

Please note, this dictionary does not currently include an English index, so searching by English will still only give results from the CC-CEDICT dictionary.  We are looking to improve on this in the near future.

Many of the entries for common words include longer definitions and example sentences. To see some of these, bring up the hsk1 list, click on the first entry (to bring up the Browse screen) and browse down through the words (either using the down arrow icon or the fling-up gesture).

As with app purchases, you only need to purchase the ABC dictionary once to then use on all of your devices. The purchase is linked to your Google account, so any Android device where you are signed into the Google account (and has Android Market, which is used to check the license), will have access to the ABC dictionary.

Android Market issues are the same as with app purchases. If you are in China/Taiwan, you will probably need to do a sim swap to make the purchase. This is a pain but only needs to be done once. Please read this for more details.

Hanping Chinese Dictionary (Free & Pro) 2.6.7 released!

October 19th, 2011
  • Minor bug fixes
Available from the Android Market.

Hanping Chinese Dictionary (Free & Pro) 2.6.5 released!

October 8th, 2011

Significant changes:

  • Custom font support
  • Improved dictionary entry formatting (Pro version only)
  • Disabled word prediction when entering search term (now much better for entering Pinyin)
  • Minor bug fixes

You now have the possibility to use your own Chinese font instead of the one included by default on your Android device (and without the need to root your phone).

Place the TTF font (for example C:\Windows\Fonts\simkai.ttf) on your SD card here:

/Android/data/com.embermitre.dictroid/zh/fonts

(you will need to create this directory yourself, though usually “/Android/data will already have been created”)

You can do this by mounting your SD card so that you can access it from your PC.

Finally, you need to restart Hanping (you may need to Force Stop it first).

How to buy paid Android apps in China/Taiwan?

July 29th, 2011

Unfortunately paid Android apps are currently unavailable in China & Taiwan amongst others (for a full list of paid-app countries see here although it’s not always up-to-date).

Android Market determines your “country” by checking which country your sim card comes from. If it comes from a paid-app supported country then you will be able to view, buy and download paid apps. Otherwise, they will be hidden away from you.

So, the simplest way to buy paid apps is to temporarily swap out your Chinese/Taiwanese sim card for another sim card from a paid-app country. It does NOT need to be active (you can connect to the Market using WiFi). With your US or UK or German sim card in place, you should be able to buy paid apps. Once you have done so, you can swap back in your Chinese/Taiwanese sim card and happily use your new paid app trouble-free.

If you do not have a paid-app-country sim card then unfortunately things are more complex. Please read about MarketEnabler.
