Hanping Chinese Dictionary Pro 3.2.3 released!

When searching English AND you have ABC English-Chinese Dictionary (i.e. a dictionary with English headwords) installed, you will now see a “中文” and “english” tab allowing you to choose whether to see Chinese headword results or English headword results. This replaces the old top-left icon functionality which was not inuitively positioned
Better handling of when to show which icons (such as handwriting icon) in search bar
More UI tweaks
Minor bug fixes

We will tidy up the icons in an upcoming update.

Note: 3.2.1 & 3.2.2 are very minor bugfix updates on 3.2.0. If you have not experienced any problems with 3.2.0 then there is no need to update.

3.2.2 fix:

Rare crash on search screen (bug introduced in 3.2.0)

3.2.1 fixes:

Better error message when handwriting engine cannot be initialised
Rare bug that sometimes made it impossible to buy either ABC dictionary

3.2.0 changes:

Action Bar UI goodness for both Search and Browse screens
- Search screen:
  - Moved History/Starred/Lists tab bar to top of screen (which is more standard on Android)
  - If you have ABC English-Chinese Dictionary installed, you will also get a second level of tabs (below Starred tab) allowing you to switch between languages
  - Search box now remains visible when switching between those tabs. This reduces the chance that you have to press Back an excessive number of times to exit the app. It also keeps the visible state of the app more consistent
  - Handwriting screen now accessible when there is already some text in the search box
- Browse screen:
  - Moved “action” items (e.g. star, play audio, copy to clipboard) to bottom of screen
  - Moved out-of-place (Search and Links icons) next to other action items at bottom of screen
  - Moved up/down navigation controls to top of screen
  - Removed “Back” icon – just use hardware Back button instead
  - More improvements to this screen coming soon
Enabled hardware acceleration on all screens
Minor bug fixes

Hanping Chinese Classic (old Hanping Chinese Dictionary Lite renamed) 3.1.0/3.1.1 released!

Now that we have recently released a brand new free version of Android’s most popular Chinese dictionary, the old free app has been renamed to Hanping Chinese Classic.

If your Android device is running Gingerbread 2.3 (or higher) you will most probably want to install the new Hanping Chinese Dictionary Lite app (and uninstall this Classic app if necessary).

Other changes in this update:

Changed app icon to silver to help distinguish it from the other Hanping apps (new Lite is blue, Pro is green)
Fixed bug (on older Android devices) where sometimes a list search would never not be properly executed (user would just see never-ending progress spinner)

We’ve just released a new free edition of Hanping Chinese Dictionary targeted specifically for Gingerbread (and higher) devices. The old free edition has been renamed to “Hanping Chinese Dict Classic”.

How does the new free app differ from the old free app?

Dictionary data is included in the application. This means there is no need for an internet connection to download/install the dictionary data on first run. Therefore, the app is now completely self-contained which is important in case you swap (or reformat) your SD card or your dictionary database somehow gets corrupted unexpectedly
The new app is much larger (10MB vs 1MB) but this should not be a problem for most people because Google Play Store now supports smart updates (for Gingerbread and higher) and so bandwidth usage should be similar to as before
No ads! In the old version, ad revenue was used to pay for servers hosting the dictionary data. Now that the dictionary data is included in the application, Google Play Store covers those costs and so we can remove the ads!
Updated UI to use Android’s latest Holo theme
