Hanping Chinese Camera vs others?

Post by carolyn »

I've never used an OCR before but want to download one before I go on a holiday to China - can you tell me why I should get hanping over other OCR apps? Also does Hanping have block translation e.g. in on a menu there is a description of the dish can hanping translate it all or do I have to do it a few characters at a time? Does it need internet/wifi connection?

Hi Carolyn,

Hanping does not currently do "block" translation. We are considering this for a future release.

The app works entirely offline. Full details can be found here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/deta ... reader.pro

I cannot speak for other apps out there, but I can only suggest trying out our app and seeing if it meets your needs.

If for any reason you are not satisfied within 30 days, we will refund your purchase, no questions asked!

With another OCR it translates what's in a frame that you can change the size of but it seems like you are limited to the number of characters in that frame but I believe Hanping doesn't use this frame so how many characters can you scan at once? I'm thinking when translating a sentence if you can only do a few characters at a time with Chinese grammar how do you remember the characters at the start by the time you get to the end?

So is Hanping suitable for a tourist?

With Hanping OCR, you also have a frame, but you adjust it be moving the central control bar up and down. You can also zoom in/out to get more or less the same effect as a cropping rectangle (the one you see in other OCR apps).

Our app works on a whole line of text. You position a line of text underneath a sensor line and it recognizes the whole lot giving you all the dictionary definitions.

Definitely the app is targeted towards people studying Chinese, though I'm pretty sure tourists would also get a lot of benefit from it. From what I've seen, none of the OCR apps out there work well on things like handwritten Chinese or stylized fonts found on shop signs, labels etc. It's important to bear this in mind before purchasing (when there is no such refund policy available).

I would recommend buying our app just before you go to China. If you are not satisfied with it, then you can just drop us an email from China to get the refund. You can ask the other OCR app developers if they are happy to do the same. If so, then you can go to China fully armed!

It will be a lot harder to buy an OCR app while you are already in China.

Thanks, I'll download it in the next few days so try it out before I go and get the hang of using it.
