This is a bug fix update on 4.0.5.

  • Improved sentence decomposition – much better handling when search text is a mix of Simplified and Traditional characters. Also fixed a related bug
  • Homescreen widgets now support manual advance – you can choose (on a per widget basis) whether the card automatically cycles to next card
  • Some UI tweaks – search language button (“pinyin”/”english”) now a little prettier :). Notifications and homescreen widgets now use Material Design background colors and text colors
  • Other bug fixes

This is a series of significant bug fix updates on the major 2.0 update released last month.

  • Faster recognition to auto-snapshot in Live mode
  • Further improvements in support of high res images. Got a 10,000 by 10,000 pixel image with characters only 10 pixels high?  No problem for Hanping!
  • If you are using SIMP-only mode and have an image containing Traditional characters, Hanping will show a simple “toast” message informing you. Also, for those dictionaries entries, both Simplified & Traditional forms shown (as SIMP [TRAD]). Likewise, if you are using TRAD-only mode.
  • Some bug fixes

Hanping Cantonese Dictionary 2.0.3/2.0.4 released

This is a bugfix update on version 2.0.2 which was released a couple of weeks ago.

  • Updated dictionary data (again) – fixed a problem where some entries were corrupt because of problem with alternative pronunciations
  • Homescreen widgets now support manual control of when to advance to the next card
  • Fixed some audio syllables – e.g. in faan6, the “f” was not as clear as it should be
  • Minor bug fixes

  • If you have Hanping Cantonese Dictionary installed: In Hanping Chinese Dictionary, click on the Hanping Cantonese Dictionary app icon (at the bottom of the navigation drawer), to launch that app showing the Cantonese equivalent of whichever word you were currently looking at

This is a bugfix update on version 2.0.1 which was released last week.

  • Updated dictionary data
  • Fixed an audio bug occurring on some Android 4.1/4.2 devices
  • Fixed a nav drawer bug – tapping on drawer would sometime activate controls under the drawer
  • When showing handwriting screen, disable dragging open of nav drawer

Happy Chinese New Year!

To celebrate, this major update brings Chinese handwriting recognition and syllable-by-syllable audio (of a real native Chinese speaker) as well as a UI overhaul (Material Design).

  • Chinese Handwriting Recognition (Android 4.1 JellyBean and higher)
  • Syllable-by-syllable Audio (over 2000 recordings from a real native Mandarin speaker) (Android 4.1 JellyBean and higher)
  • Material design
  • Added Navigation Drawer – Settings, Add-ons, Backup/Restore etc screens are now available via top-left “hamburger” menu (on the Details screen, simply swipe from the left)
  • Better tabs – swipe left and right on the main Search screen to switch between History, Starred lists and predefined Lists
  • User-friendly naming for predefined lists (e.g. “Common Characters 1” instead of “chars1”)
  • Heads-up Clipboard notifications (Android 5 Lollipop only)
  • Fixed history bug – using some IMEs would lead to lots of “random” words appearing in the history
  • Fixed copy/paste bug on search box – long-press on text inside search box now correctly brings up top contextual bar containing copy, paste etc buttons

This is a bug fix update on 4.0.2.

  • Disable navigation drawer drag-from-left while handwriting view visible – to prevent accidental drawer-opening
  • Re-enabled English TTS (only applicable if ABC English-Chinese Dictionary add-on installed)
  • Much faster lookups for Hanping Chinese Camera
  • Added Audio Playback Test dialog for older devices (because a couple of older devices are having problems with the new audio)
  • Bug fixes

This update brings a UI refresh of Material Design goodness and is currently being rolled out to all devices running Android 4.4 (KitKat) and higher.  The rollout may take a few days to complete.

  • Improved recognition
  • Material Design and redesigned action barn – even more user-friendly 🙂
  • Navigation Drawer
  • Better support for high-res images – now (on most newer devices) you can work with up to 16 megapixels. This is great when you are working with a page containing a lot of text, such as a large menu
  • Updated sample images – now there are two sets; one for Simplified characters and one for Traditional characters. The set shown depends on your Simp/Trad setting in Chinese Settings screen
  • Image Mode: added button (pen icon) to launch image editor (e.g. Android’s Photos app) – note: if you are viewing an auto-snapshot, first use save button (disk icon) to save the new image to your photo library
  • Image Mode: Moved text direction button out of action bar (because most people don’t use it). Overflow menu (top-right three dots icon) now has a “Show Direction”) item. Use that to show a text direction icon in the top-left corner of the window.
  • Live Mode: Flash button moved up into action bar (so easier to access). Macro button removed, because it didn’t work on many devices anyway.
  • Live Mode: Manual mode button (M icon) much simpler: now, it simply stops automatic refocusing and auto-snapshot. To focus, touch the window. To snapshot (i.e. use current preview in Image mode), use the shutter button (center-left icon)
  • Some bug fixes

This is a bug fix update on 4.0.1.

  • Better Navigation Drawer – includes icons to launch other Hanping apps (if installed)
  • Lollipop only – Fixed Heads-up notification issues including new option to enabled/disable Heads-Up notifications – please note Android 5 (Lollipop) no longer supports the old status bar Ticker Text notifications
