Hanping Chinese Dictionary Pro 3.4.2 released!

June 29th, 2013
  • Fixed rare ABC CE database bug on some older devices (only a problem on some custom firmware running SQLite 3.7.2, for example)
  • ABC EC divider  (Details screen) now shows headword if different from Details screen headword (e.g. Lookup “anyway”, then click “see: anyhow”)
  • Fixed linking bug in ABC EC word definition – would sometimes get “not in dictionary” when it clearly is
  • Force update of very old CC-CEDICT database installations

Available from the Google Play Store (Lite 3.4.1 & Pro 3.4.2).

Hanping Chinese Dictionary Lite 3.4.1 released!

June 26th, 2013
  • New Radicals lookup (access it through overflow menu at the top-right of the screen).  If you want to enter a character and you know the radical then this new feature will help you.  Radicals are grouped by stroke-count and sorted by frequency within each group.  Click on the radical to get a list of all the characters that use that radical. Again, this list is grouped by stroke-count (actually, number of strokes not including the radical itself) and sorted by frequency within each group. Try long-pressing on radicals or characters to jump straight to the Browse screen
  • Characters for radical 山 All Radicals
  • Improved sentence decomposition – better handling of punctuation etc
  • Added concept of simple vs. complex headword forms. Some words are termed “complex” maybe because a syllable has multiple pronunciations or multiple characters. Such words are shown on the Details screen with a + icon in the top right. Hit that to see the complex form of the headword
  • List items only appear once – so a list of 100 words actually appears as 100 items instead of something like 106!  This was caused by a dictionary containing the same word multiple times
  • Details screen now shows even more related dictionary entries. Side note: we’ve been showing entries across all dictionaries on one page since 2011
  • Left/right paging on Details screen – explore neighbouring words in the dictionary (note: screenshot below taken from Pro version with ABC dictionary in-app purchase)
  • Left/right paging in Details screen
  • External Links: on first use, Hanping now informs you that these third party links use the internet connection and may include advertisements (which we do not benefit from)
  • External Links: now includes a link to a website showing stroke animations – this is an external website and so includes advertising (which we do not benefit from)
  • External Links: added Google Image search and HanziCraft amongst others
  • Added support for Samsung’s Multi-Window (only on applicable devices)
  • Generate vocab sheet from starred list – this allows you to share a starred list as text using Android’s powerful Share feature.  To access this feature, go to the Starred tab on the main Search screen and long-press on one of the starred lists
  • Some new Hanzi colorings – introducing the brand new “hanping” coloring!  This coloring uses the same beautiful colors as “dummit” but assigns them to the tones in a different way.  We’ve also added “speccy” coloring inspired by the old ZX Spectrum. The “hanping” coloring is:
    • Tone 1 (high, flat tone) – blue – think of a flat blue lake, or a blue sky
    • Tone 2 (rising tone) – green – think of green grass growing!
    • Tone 3 (low, falling-rising tone) – orange – (we chose this one for aesthetic reasons)
    • Tone 4 (falling tone) – red – think of someone giving an angry command
  • Several bug fixes
