Just as with the free version, you do not need to be connected to the internet. There are a couple of minor features (e.g. links to external websites like YellowBridge and also Android's built-in Voice Recognition) that do require an internet connection but these are not needed in normal use.

Voice Recognition is the same as in the free version (microphone icon on Search screen). This can be configured (in the Android system settings) to recognize Mandarin.

Something which has been lingering in the dark empty space of my mind, Taiwan pronunciations for certain characters are different. Now that I'm working on the Starred Tag Editor I was wondering whether it's possible to have a 'Taiwan' mode which would display the characters with the correct equivalent pinyin/bopmofo. This is something which could be switched on or off and maybe could be extended to other regions of China (only if the CC-CEDICT contains the information of course).
It seems that the dictionary standardises on the following: 'Taiwan pr. [%pinyin%]'.
I've been thinking of making this option available to edit new or existing starred lists by replacing the existing pinyin. However, a better option would be to have a new column in the starred database which could store the Taiwan version of the pinyin and then anybody wanting to view their starred lists in 'Taiwan' mode could simply click a menu option in HanPing and that would then read the 'Taiwan pinyin' (if available), making the performance much quicker.

e.g. 血 血 [xue4] /blood/informal colloquial and Taiwan pr. [xie3]/also pr. [xue3]/CL:滴[di1],片[pian4]/
Of course, I'm not sure how feasible this is given my current knowledge of Chinese and whether or not you can globally state that wherever a certain character is used which has an alternative pronunciation (Taiwan in my case) it should always be pronounced that way.

Word matching from ABC Dictionary seems to have some problems because the dictionary adds participles (的) and other artifacts. When you try to click on a listing from the dictionary, you get a "not found" message. Why not match the same way that you do for pasted phrases and even user-entered strings of characters - match what you can and then show the individual character meanings? Without this, the ABC English-Chinese dictionary is not that helpful many times.

I'll have a look into this. I see 160 places in CC-CEDICT where "Taiwan pr." exists which means about 0.16% of the entries are applicable. It does make good sense to add those alternative pronunciations (such as xue3 for 血) to the pinyin index (we already do this with "Also pronounced" phrases). And I suppose we could also allow for playing the audio back with Taiwanese pronunciation. However, since it is such a small percentage of the dictionary, I'm not sure if it's worth the extra config setting. I will have a think about it...

In terms of the starred database, I think it's definitely best to keep the standard pronunciation. This will help match the the starred entry against whichever dictionary is currently loaded. Whether to display pinyin, zhuyin, taiwanese pinyin or whatever is more of a display issue.

Thanks for the heads-up - I'll get that fixed soon (though not sure it will be in the next update). ABC dictionary inclusion is still quite new, but we'll continuously improve things in the coming updates. Please bear with us!

It's high time you looked at synchronizing the dictionary with e-readers (Cool reader, aldiko) and SRS software (especially Anki). For example, I can look up the meaning of a character or word am studying on Golden dict, which uses a .bgl (babylon) dictionary. I think allowing other software to access the Hanping API will make it *at least* twice as useful as it is now.

Are you saying Golden Dict already has the interoperability with those other apps? If so, it shouldn't be too hard for Hanping to do the same. I would just need to figure out how they do it.

Small request, but it would be nice to be able to to be ale to adjust the colour and transparency of the widget, for those of us who like an integrated look to the phone.

Hi - which device is that? Is there a standard transparency level for widgets? If so, I can definitely adjust that for Hanping's widget too. Making it user-configurable would go against our minimum configuration aim, however!

It's a ZTE Blade running LauncherPro with Simple Calendar widget and a modified Google Genie widget. I believe they are both 50% transparancy. That and maybe 40% transparency are the value I see most often in widgets.
