Hanping Chinese Dictionary (Pro & Cantonese) 7.0 released

September 9th, 2022

This is a major update that brings a much more powerful search engine (especially for English searches) as well as more useful search results – decompositions, related results etc.

Main changes include:

  • Handwriting and radicals panes, now allow you to see results without having to close it each time. Especially useful in landscape or on a tablet

  • Search results now show tags and stars

  • Convenient related English search buttons below exact match search result. (e.g. person, people, human etc in screenshot below)

  • Brand new history screen where searches are grouped by date. Each item indicates whether it is a textual search (magnifying glass icon) or dictionary lookup Chinese word. You can pin items to the top. You can also delete items individually or by date etc.

Note: if you prefer the older simpler History style (list format) then you can switch back to that via the Settings
  • Star, tag, audio icons etc have been moved up to be next to the headword. This is a more logical position.

  • Notice how the search box is now always visible. So, no longer need to hit back multiple times just to make a new search
  • Sentence decomposition now shows surrounding text (in faint grey) for context

  • Search results are now grouped according to type of result – e.g. examples, decomposition, prefix, suffix, reverse lookup etc. Use the down arrow to expand each group and see all the results of that type.

  • There’s so much more too, including several bug fixes, particular regarding AnkiDroid export, and updated dictionary entries.

Available from the Google Play Store.

MIUI 11 unable to grant AnkiDroid permission to Hanping Chinese Pro?

January 4th, 2020

For any of you running MIUI 11 (which is the system running on most Xiaomi devices released in the past couple of years), you might have experienced an issue with the AnkiDroid Flashcards integration.

The first time you select AnkiDroid Flashcards from Hanping‘s side navigation drawer, you will be presented with:

Tapping on Grant Permission would normally take you forward to configure the AnkiDroid configuration, but on MIUI 11 it fails and you are taken back to Hanping’s main screen instead. This is a bug with MIUI 11.0.3 (which hopefully Xiaomi will fix in the near future) and luckily there is a workaround:

  1. Enable Developer Options, by going to your device’s Settings then My device / All specs and then tap on MIUI version about 10 times quickly. You will then see a message You are now a developer (if you don’t, then you may have previously already enabled this option)
  2. Go to Settings / Additional Settings / Developer Options screen and scroll to the bottom to turn off MIUI optimization
  3. Back on the homescreen, long tap on Hanping Pro and then App Info / Permissions / Additional permissions and turn on Read and write to the AnkiDroid database
  4. Launch Hanping Pro / AnkiDroid Flashcards (side nav drawer) and then the Grant Permission should work!

One good strategy is to just enter the first character of each syllable (e.g. “zgr” for “zhongguoren”) and, if there are too many matches, then finish the final syllable in full (e.g. “zgren” for “zhongguoren“)
  • Added some missing HSK2-5 multisyllable sounds (Hanping Pro only)
  • Fixed bug in vocab importer (mostly concerning traditional Chinese)
  • Fixed Ankidroid audio playback issue (when dictionary app not already running in background)

Hanping Chinese Dictionary (Pro, Lite & Cantonese) 6.8 released

March 26th, 2018

This update is for Android Marshmallow 6.0 and later.

  • Added Import User Vocab feature to allow bulk import of words into your custom tags. In the Tags tab, click on the 3-dots icon top-right (just below Tags label) and select Import user vocab file.  You can then pick any text file and Hanping will automatically extract vocab from it. Note – the text file should contain a vocab list (e.g. one vocab item per line), not freeform text.  Several different formats are supported (not just the Hanping format).Hanping first gives you a preview of ALL the words it finds before you proceed with the import. Imported words are auto-tagged like “_imported::2018-03-26 09:27” with the imported tag group displayed next to the starred and notes groups at the top of the Tags tab.
  • New launcher icon (Android Oreo 8.0 and later) – the old-style Hanping icon does not fill well in the new Adaptive Icon style of Android Oreo, so it’s received a total redesign!
  • Added Zhonga to external links (great for example sentences)
  • Wildcard search templates moved from Search screen overflow menu (“Custom search…”) to search box context menu. To test this, enter 朋友 in search box and long-tap on search box (make sure the text is not selected). You will see menu items for *朋友, *朋友*, *朋*友* etc
  • Pro & Lite only: Updated CC-CEDICT dictionary data and fixed some translation issues in the example sentences
  • Several bug fixes

Available from the Google Play Store.

  • Performance improvements (e.g. regarding tag lists)
  • (Mandarin apps only) Added another 100 example sentences (provided by TutorMandarin)
  • Clip Monitor Quick Settings Tile tweaks
  • Many bug fixes

Available from the Google Play Store.
